Our toddlers have had a wonderful time reading ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and talking about healthy eating.
The children enjoyed taking part in their own fruit tasting activity where they had the opportunity to explore new foods and textures. Surprisingly some of the children loved the lemons and limes!
We also took part in part in making our very own hungry caterpillars using balloons and fruit and then discussed the different fruits the caterpillar ate along his way.
The children are always enthusiastic when trying new things, including tastes and textures, and associating healthy eating with pleasurable experience supports future food decision-making. Eating can be considered an opportunity to “have a go” with new tastes and sensations. The child is making choices and showing autonomy as he eats independently. He is keeping his focus on what he is doing, and is making mental links between this experience and what he already knows.
