Preschool are learning about the five senses. Each day they discovered a new sense through lots of fun crafts and activities.
Monday was all about sound and what we hear. We had our weekly music lesson with Mrs Colclough, which the children love taking part in. During our circle time we also used our song bag, where the children can pull out an object that represents different songs which we all love the sing! During garden play we encouraged the children to listen out for different noises, some noises that were pointed out included birds and planes!
Tuesday was all about touch. We set up tuff trays with different materials for the children to feel and mix together. For our crafts they drew around their hands and stuck a different material to each finger. They then had to use a describing word to label each one! We also made play dough which is great for their fine motor skills.
Wednesday was all about different smells. The tuff tray was set up with flowers, basil and mint for them to smell, mix together and make potions. We mixed paint with shaving foam and coriander and encouraged all the children to use their noses and describe what they could smell while painting. We then added different scents to the play dough, this included mint, orange extract and basil! During Wednesday meal times we asked the children to describe what their meals smelt of, encouraging lots of great discussions.
Thursday was all about sight and what we see around us. We played the object game, where we put a few objects on a tray and then the children would close their eyes. Once they had done this we would take an object away and they would have to identify which object was missing. We also had lots of bubble mixture in the garden and the children could make their own bubbles and then chase them and pop them! We had some amazing big bubbles which the children loved seeing float across the garden.
And finally on Friday it was all about taste. We emphasised play in our kitchen corner and on our tuff trays. We also had a tasting tray where each child could taste different food items and describe them to us – for example sour or sweet!
